John Mohin was born in Liverpool in 1953 and raised in the very heart of the city. His father was the Manager of a famous pub The Eagle, well known for being visited frequently by The Beatles, but now elevated to the status of a Liverpool landmark, primarily because when President George Washington appointed America’s first ever consul on 7th June 1790, it was to Liverpool, rather than London and the Consul General had his residence here in Paradise Street.
John was educated at the Blue Coat School and studied at The Harris College, later The University of Central Lancashire. He is a Graduate of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and completed his studies in Strategic Marketing Management at Harvard Business School in Boston, USA.
He joined the distinguished House of Wedgwood as a Graduate Management Trainee in July 1974 and gained a comprehensive education in the company, its culture and heritage. He is now acknowledged as an authority on Wedgwood and was duly elected Patron of The Wedgwood Society.
John Mohin served on the Board of the prestigious Wedgwood Museum, affiliated to the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; he was appointed a Director of Wedgwood Museum Trading Ltd and conferred with an Honorary Doctorate for Services to the British Ceramic Industry.
When Wedgwood merged with Waterford Crystal, John Mohin was appointed to the senior executive at what became head office, in the Republic of Ireland. Having gained knowledge of both institutions, he was eminently qualified to take command of overseas divisions for Waterford Wedgwood Plc.
He served as President of Waterford Wedgwood Japan Ltd and held responsibility for all markets in Asia. Appointed Managing Director of Waterford Wedgwood Australia, he was responsible for developing the Asia-Pacific Region, establishing Waterford Wedgwood New Zealand Ltd and was appointed Chairman of the Waterford Wedgwood Australia New Zealand Pension Fund.
He was granted Australian Citizenship for services to the Commonwealth of Australia and on returning to Britain, John was made a Director of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, Friends in the UK and later appointed Chairman, when HRH The Prince Charles became Patron.
In addition to the Wedgwood Museum and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, John is accomplished in high-level fundraising having served as Trustee of The Army Cadet Force, The Army Benevolent Fund and personally appointed by the Archbishop of York to The Archbishop of York Youth Trust.
John Mohin was Granted the Royal Warrant by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, HRH The Prince Charles and by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. He was retained as an adviser by the late Lord Louis Mountbatten of Burma, the last Viceroy and first Governor General of India.
John Mohin is Visiting Professor of the Business School at the University of Chester and serves as a Member of the Advisory Board to the Dean of Lancashire School of Business and Enterprise. He was made an Ambassador for the University of Central Lancashire, the place where it all began. During the celebrations for Liverpool being designated European Capital of Culture, John was made an Honorary Fellow of Liverpool John Moores University, for services to the Foundation for Citizenship.
John is a distinguished Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Marketing and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts. He is a Freeman of the City of London and was made an Honorary Member of the City Pickwick Club, the original location, now devoted to the immortal memory of Charles Dickens.
John has three children, Charles, William and Kate, three grandchildren Albert, Isla and Edward and is married to Paula. He was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, for Services to Business and Charity in the North West of England.
