Alan was born and raised in Knotty Ash, Liverpool. He obtained a Bachelor of Law (Hons) degree from Staffordshire University.
Alan spent several years working with Victim Support in central London, providing support to families of homicide and serious violent crimes whilst also training hundreds of volunteers to support victims of crime.
Alan is passionate about supporting family (unpaid) carers who he feels do not receive the recognition or support they rightly deserve. In 2005 he was appointed as the Chief Executive of St Helens Carers Centre where he has overseen the development of the organisation and improved services for family carers including the introduction of a Young Carers service.
In 2024 Alan received an MBE for services to the community. Alan’s long-term partner is Spanish which has enabled him to become fluent in Spanish with a slight Liverpudlian accent!
