Breast Mates main group

Breast Mates Cancer Support receives The King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

The Lord-Lieutenant joined the Mayor of Knowsley, Cllr Ken McGlashan, Leader of Knowsley Council, Cllr Graham Morgan, the CEO of Knowsley Council, Mr. James Duncan and the Mayors of Prescot and Whiston, Cllr Mark Burke and Cllr Stephen Henry at the presentation of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service to Breast Mates Cancer Support.

This truly amazing group of volunteers provides mutual support for people diagnosed with breast cancer. When patients receive a breast cancer diagnosis they are shocked, confused, lost and need to talk to someone who really understands. The NHS has not got the resources to provide that time and emotional support and Breast Mates fill this gap.

They also have an established support group specifically for secondary cancer patients; they successfully worked with the hospital clinicians to provide members / patients’ stories to strengthen the case for funding of a specialist secondary breast cancer nurse.

Breast Mates provides mutual support and a wide range of social activities: hospital and house visits, weekly walk and talk sessions, secondary breast cancer support meetings, dance classes, social events, afternoon tea, outings, fashion show, cycling project, allotment, counselling, leaflets and information.

Pictured below are the fabulous volunteers and trustees, and in particular, Julie Morgan, Shelagh Hill, Avril Finsbury, Tracey Carmichael and Eileen McGovern.

Well done to everyone involved, you were inspirational and your award is very well-deserved.
