On Wednesday 12th February 2025 the Lord-Lieutenant presented Birkdale Community Hub and Library their King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS).
The Community Hub and Library came into being after the Friends of Birkdale Library charity was created in September 2013 and the progress they have made is truly outstanding.
It is so much more than a library, although it does provide a free lending library service with about 6,700 books. The Community Hub also provides a warm space facility for a weekly chat, warm drinks, fruit and biscuits, read the newspapers, do quizzes and play board games making new friendships. It has a “knit and natter” group, a lego club, a story time session, a computer club and – not surprisingly – a thriving book club.
The Trustees and volunteers gathered at Birkdale Sports and Social Club for the presentation and it was wonderful to see so many of them and hear the buzz in the air as everyone chatted.
A well-deserved award for a fabulous voluntary organisation.
